Sports were my most consistent extracurricular of choice since childhood. Things changed a bit when I got to Howard University. Though I didn’t necessarily play sports, walking the Georgia Ave. hill to my classes was a workout within itself; that’s where I noticed the impact of choosing to move your body. I saw how taking the stairs and walking instead of taking the elevator and shuttle caused changes in my body aesthetically and I wasn’t as out of breath when I got to my destination. This combination, amongst other things, encouraged me to keep going. That was the birth of my choice to commit to fitness. Over the years, I realized what always drew me to (and sometimes back to) working out was community – people to hold me accountable and motivate me as I do the same for them. More recently, with my ongoing journey to motherhood, faith and my community are what help me stay afloat in my toughest times. My background in biology, my personal experiences, my love for fitness (for the purposes of well-being, self-gratitude, and sometimes just a means to get away), and the acknowledgment of the power of community are what draw me to FIT4MOM. The importance of the well-being of a mama even before she holds her baby in her arms is what draws me to FIT4Baby.
